Drama
John Logan
Characters 5 male, 2 female
Various sets.
This compelling drama by the author of Never the Sinner begins just moments before the 1936 execution of Bruno Richard Hauptmann, the German immigrant who was convicted of murdering the Lindbergh's baby. With prison guards doubling as other characters in flashback, Hauptmann tells his gripping story.
"It is one of rising anti German sentiment in America, of rich versus poor, of the state versus the individual." Hollywood Reporter.
"A spellbinding and surprisingly fresh ... engrossing drama, intelligently told." Variety.
"In telling one man's story, it succeeds in encompassing everything that is essential about America today." Newsday.
Hauptmann John Logan Books
Logan is an Academy Award winning screenwriter and Tony winning playwright. Most of his attention comes from work like GLADIATOR, THE AVIATOR, and plays like NEVER THE SINNER and RED. This may be his most forgotten/obscure work, and it shouldn't be. It's absolutely brilliant. The story of the Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping as narrated by the accused kidnapper Bruno Richard Hauptmann. The way Logan fluidly moves Hauptmann through the first act as we see the events around his arrest and interrogation and the kidnapping, is masterful and especially the last few pages showing the kidnapping is just haunting. The second act is 90% the trial, taken mostly from the court records, and Logan has Hauptmann play his own defense attorney crossing swords with prosecutor David Wilentz in masterful courtroom drama. Logan leaves some things ambiguous, and on other things he boldly declares his beliefs and opinions thru Hauptmann and his story and narration. Some I agree with, others I don't. I personally believe Hauptmann had SOMETHING to do with the kidnapping, and that, perhaps his family was threatened by the rest of the kidnappers if he gave anything up, so he clung to his innocence. But that's just my opinion. I played Wilentz (and other smaller roles) in the Minnesota state premiere of the show in Minneapolis, and loved performing this challenging, moving, intense, and incredible true story that shows us that the 1930's and its xenophobia, suspicion, and flexible morals aren't so different from our own. A great show for small theatre companies, all you need are some chairs, maybe a table, a stage, and talented actors to handle the challenging roles. As I said, I played multiple roles, everyone in the show did except the actor playing Hauptmann, and it adds layers to the main characters and works beautifully. It makes it so you can have a cast of just 7 so it doesn't require a huge cast. This show needs to be done more, and while I am not big on repeating myself in performances, I would LOVE to play Wilentz again. Truly this is a small gem/masterpiece of a play by a playwright/writer that is one of the best in the world.Product details

Hauptmann John Logan Books Reviews
Hauptmann's depiction of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping/murder trial makes for a quick and page-turning read and gives the audience a frightening look inside the US system of justice. Brilliant playwright. I can't wait to read "Peter and Alice"!
Bruno Richard Hauptmann, the man convicted of kidnapping and murdering the Lindbergh baby, gets a fascinating makeover in this highly dramatic play about the events leading up to the kidnapping (Act One) and the most absurd trial -- based on very little hard evidence, and much more mass media frenzy and thwarted expectations -- whose life ended in execution (Act Two). Sure, this may sound like it should appeal to only history buffs and journalists and Lindbergh biographers, but not true whatsoever; this is a play that is as relevant (and thrilling) now as ever.
Without giving much away, one thing I loved so much about this play was how it gracefully gave a face to the immigrant. In today's world, it's easy to be on one side of the issue, without ever really caring for the people and their families who are caught in the middle. But in "Hauptmann," John Logan has crafted a play for our times, a play for America -- and the immigrant history its deeply tied to -- wrapping it up in a production that was both riveting and moving. In the final pages, when Hauptmann's wife speaks juxtaposed against Charles Lindbergh's speech in the courtroom, I almost couldn't contain myself. My heart began to swell up, my eyes got teary, and I began to wonder how many times this has happened before. How often have the poor, the class-less, the immigrant been made to suffer at the expense of the rich, or the public's emotionally charged outcry or the mass media's hunger for a good story?
This isn't just a great play to see, but it's a beautiful one to read -- and one that reads like an exciting novel and suspense thriller-film, all in one. Bravo, John Logan!
